Simple Guide:

Discover Hoi An Night Market

People come to Hoi An for many reasons, but shopping is top of the list. The Hoi An Night Market is a cornucopia of street food, Vietnamese souvenirs, kitchen cookery, and more. A lot of energy is packed into this one street, and it’s well worth a visit.

Located right in the middle of Ancient Town, the Hoi An Night Market is easy to find and a tourist hot spot. Not quite a tourist trap but a highly touristed area for sure.

The Hoi An Night Market is a great place to shop for lanterns.

My boyfriend and I had Chinese New Year off from work, so we took advantage of the three-day weekend and overspent on a flight to Vietnam. We flew into Da Nang and took a car to Hoi An.

We’re currently working six days a week with no end in sight, trying to put a circus show back on in Macau. We needed this holiday. We didn’t really think of it, but Vietnam also celebrates the holiday. They call it Tet, and it’s to celebrate the Lunar New Year. There were a LOT of people there.

Leave it to me to find the single most expensive and busiest weekend to show off this incredible city to my boyfriend for the first time.

“Welcome to Hoi An, sorry about the holiday tax.” 20% extra on everything! Whatever, I have zero regrets. Take my money just please give me some spring rolls in return.

Hoi An tops my list of favorite cities in Southeast Asia! There are many reasons, but the best part has to be all the shopping I can indulge in without feeling too devastated about my bank account once I get home from my holiday.

Asia is known for its’ night markets. And the Hoi An Night Market fits the bill.

What is the Hoi An Night Market?

Take a deep breath and get ready to haggle.

Also known as Nguyen Hoang Night Market, this vibrant market is filled with food vendors and more souvenirs than your luggage can hold. This place is busy. If you don’t enjoy a crowd I wouldn’t suggest spending your time here. However, if you can muster up the courage to face the packs of people it’s worth walking up and down at least once. Go for the experience, right?

The Hoi An Night Market is not a market where you’re going to find the highest quality of items. Though many resources will share that you can find gorgeous hand-crafted finds, from my experience that’s stretching the truth. Many stalls sell the same things even if they all say their brother or sister makes them. Don’t get me wrong! There’s nothing wrong with this, but I’d prefer you knew what you were getting into before heading there.

Go for people-watching or exercising your bartering skills for cheap trinkets to bring home for friends and family. But if the name of the game is finding quality Vietnamese goods then I would suggest walking around Ancient Town and strolling into the individual shops. I found the most brilliant painting that is currently hanging in my Macau flat. A bit more expensive than my $2 earrings but well worth the price.

Isn’t the painting pretty?? So proud.

What to buy at the Hoi An Night Market?

Shop for: cheap jewelry, kitchen supplies (bowls, spice grinders, wooden spoons), lanterns, cute bags, kids’ toys, street food and Vietnamese souvenirs.

Personally? This last time we bought a spice grinder and came close to buying a few lanterns. The first time I went I bought at least 3 pairs of cheap but super cute dangly earrings (I think they were $2 each), some wooden bowls, and some coasters.

Food in Hoi An

As for the food, try the BBQ frog legs. Or chase down the guy in a Banh Chau car. He sells a savory Vietnamese Crepe situation with various types of sizzling meat mixed with onion and bean sprouts all put together with a plate of lettuce and fresh herbs. And if meat isn’t your thing there are plenty of fresh fruit carts. I’ve tried them and haven’t gotten sick, but pick a fruit with a skin that’s peeled off just to be safe. There are also sweet crepes, mango-less mango cakes filled with peanuts, and Vietnamese pizza. Oh! And lots of bar carts serving cocktails and beer. This place is in no shortage of alcohol in adorable carts.

How long do I need at the Hoi An Night Market?

Plan to be here for plus or minus an hour.

Once you’ve seen a handful of stalls you’ve seen them all. But it’s also easy to linger looking at all the pretty lanterns.

Where is the Hoi An Night Market?

Address: Nguyễn Hoàng, Phường Minh An, Hội An, Quảng Nam, Vietnam

Though technically down one street, you’ll find that it’s a nightly event that spills out onto the cross street, Nguyn Phuc Chu, hugging the river. If you’re in Old Town Hoi An or the Ancient Town, cross the Cầu An Hội Bridge to An Hoi and walk towards the famous restaurant MANGO MANGO, you won’t miss it. If you do miss it. The market’s probably not open.

If you still have no idea what is happening, ask anyone around “night market?” and they will point you in the right direction.

When is the Hoi An Night Market?

The market is open every day from 5-6 pm until “late”. A lot of stalls will start closing shop around 9:00 pm but others will stay open until around 11:00 pm.

I’ve said it about 10 times throughout my blog but I love Hoi An and find new reasons to love it every time I go for a short weekend. Between the tailoring, the food, and the shopping it doesn’t get old for me. Check out the night market for the experience and if you’re looking for other things to do, read up on my post of Things to Do in Hoi An.
